The Local Area

While many towns’ histories are consigned primarily to books, a simple stroll through Edenbridge brings the tale of this quaint market town to life. The market that lead to much of its success was established by a Charter granted by Henry III in 1227 and still runs once a week.

The high street retains many Tudor-era timber framed buildings. While the bridge from which the town takes its name was originally built in the reign of Henry VII. The present bridge being just a wee slip of a crossing, having been constructed in 1836.

It’s this heritage when combined with all Edenbridge offers today, that makes it so special. Everything you need for modern life is here, but it’s delivered in a way that’s true to its roots and traditions.

With a traditional high street running through its centre, Edenbridge ably caters to all your day-to-day needs. Favouring independent retailers over high street names, you’ll find family run butchers, florists, greengrocers, antique and pet shops, and even an ice-cream parlour.

Offering the very best local produce for nearly 800 years now, Edenbridge Market is also still going strong. From cheeses, chocolate and honey to pickles, vegetables and bread, every Thursday a veritable feast of artisan delights is unveiled.

For bigger shops, there’s a large Waitrose. If you realise you’ve forgotten something, the Tesco Express and Costcutter are both open late. Add to this, chemists, a post office and an array of hairdressers and nail salons, and TN8 almost has it all.

There will of course be times when Edenbridge doesn’t have what you need. For those occasions, Tunbridge Wells is easy to reach. Boasting a large shopping centre and Royal Tunbridge Place, you’ll find a wide selection of high street favourites and designer brands.

Alternatively, for a more boutique-style retail experience, there’s The Pantiles’ range of independent shops, galleries, antique stores, and cafés. Bluewater Shopping Centre and Ashford Designer Outlet are also easy to reach and collectively home to over 400 stores.

If you want to dine out, there are a number of options to consider. The Longhouse combines its Malaysian and Chinese fusion menu with a warm welcome. Tom Bell offers traditional fish and chips. While the Quality Tandoori serves refined Indian cuisine. Then there are the town’s collection of pubs.

The Old Eden and Ye Olde Crown both date back to the 16th Century, and have great menus and cosy interiors. Exposed beams and inglenook fireplaces are the only way to dine. What’s more, being located in the midst of the Kent countryside, there are plenty more magnificent inns to discover in the local area.

Surrounded by the Kent countryside, The Senary is a stylish gateway to nature. A stroll with the family, golf, horse-riding, sailing, cycling. Whatever takes your fancy, there are countless ways to embrace the great outdoors, including a selection of local sports clubs.
